Can't really tell you what the problem is but it's probably not VATS as this was intoduced in 86. Also the VATS does not kill the fuel pump as you described. I know the 85 has the alarm (that flashes the Security-light when not activated) but this will not keep the car from starting as far as I know.
When you turn on the ignition, is it totally dead? As in no lights on the cluster and no heater-fan or nothing ? If this is the case, you may have a problem with the ingnition-switch or as simple as the battery connection.. Just guessing here ...

When I went to get the car this morning at the gas station I turned the corner and I see red stuff all over my car :mad thinking it was paint :cuss . It turned out to be ketchup from one end to the other, every panel, window, wheel, everything :mad . They must have used a gallon, I had to pull my door panels off after washing it to get the ketchup out of the outer window seals :cuss . If I ever catch somebody vandalizing mine or anybodys car I will personally break my foot off in their **** and go get another leg (I have a prothetic Right leg) and repeat the procedure :mad :mad :mad

Towards the end of summer my 86 would start first thing in the morning, but after it got warmed up and I stopped somewhere, when I went back to start it again it wouldn't start....... All lights worked, but no ignition.
After getting the bypass kit, it continued to do the same thing.
Put in a new starter, and that cured it for about a week.
Put in another starter with a heat shield, and it hasn't happened again.
Check you battery, but don't rule out the starter......
