Default L98 cam confusion

An earlier thread on cams reports that there is no gain when upgrading the cam on an otherwise stock L98. Corvette Fever mag (10/94, Dave Emanuel "Horsepower Conspiracy") took a stock L98 and swapped in a TPIS Super Profile cam. After tuning, the car went from 14.18 to 13.47 in the 1/4. It also gained 3mph. No other mods (except the freebies). How is that possible? 7/10 with a cam change? Is Corvette Fever reputable? Is Dave Emanuel a Corvette guru? Any comments? Please enlighten me.

dont rely on an E/T change to verify a gain. the mph figure is what will show true power increases. in this case, 3mph was achieved. E/T is traction based... what was the 60ft on each run? bet that data wasnt given because it was much better on the 2nd run, which probably made half the gain E/T-wise

No HP gain with a cam upgrade is just not true. It's just that on a cost/HP ratio there are better gains with other mods. Also many shops overstate the gains. With the right profile you bet you can improve 1/4 mile times and speeds with a bigger cam.

In the past, I put in a comp cams 252ah flat tappet tpi grind with a pretty stock 86, it had deleted precats and cat back. The cam made a dramatic difference in seat of the pants from low to midrange. Actually through the whole tpi power band 1000-4000. Well worth the 200 or so I had spent at the time.

Perhaps that best way to phrase this is to say that a cam alone in a stock engine will not yeild its potential.... As with all modifications, it is the total package and putting together the right combination. Add a good set of heads, intake modifications and exhaust and you are set.
