Hey guys, I'm having major problems, that are causing residual ones. How. why, and what is the solution to STOP the belt from shreading and melting on my 88. I pray you all can give me step by step directions due to the fact that i am not a mechanic. Ever since i got my car i am thinking about becoming one. As we all know, older cars are a project and unless you have the financial resources to have a pro do it all at once, its frustrating yet i love it. thank you in advance for any help that will solve this one.
The usual suspects would be bad pulley alignment, or something such as alt., tensioner, w.pump, AC, or AIR etc. is bound up. With belt off inspect that all pulleys move freely. If aftermaket pulleys have been addad (AIR delete etc.) take a straight edge and make sure they are on the same plane/alignment w/no angle from pulley to pulley.
You did not mention how the belt is fraying, but if it is fraying on the engine side (as opposed to the radiator side), you may want to look at the Air Conditioning mounting bolts. When I changed the water pump on my 86' I thought the 2 silver bolts were the same, but one is slightly longer than the other and will rub the edge of the serpintine belt if it is in the wrong position.
I do not know if the bolts are the same on the 88', but it is something to check.
As previously stated, check the alignment of the pulleys and also make sure all the pulleys are at the same angle. You may be able shim some of the brackets with washers to make sure everything lines up and is square.
