It's not a smooth transition when it kicks in... and it seems to kick in at the wrong time.
Two examples I have ... making a left turn in an intersection with oncoming traffic... as I start to go, I hit a small bump in the road and the ASR kicked it... car stopped for the few seconds until the ASR full released. Just made it out before getting nailed.
2nd,
I was out one evening after washing the car... pull a u-turn and merge into traffic.. at the 1-2 shift the car breaks the tires lose for about 4 feet as the car starts to go sideways... which normally would of been very easy to correct until the ASR kicked in with the rear end coming out on me. The tires stopped there forward motion and the rear was now sliding sideways.
I will keep it on in heavy rain... but thats about it, it's off before I move the car.
It's junk. I was pulling out into a very small hole in traffic two nights ago when it decided to play with me. I normally turn it off but I forgot about it. When I hit the gas to go the rear of the car might have stepped 6 inches out of line when the ASR kicked in and killed my throttle. That's not a good thing when there is a car coming.
I turn it off all the time if I remember it, too many suprises for me. I might leave it on if I'm driving on ICE, but rain isn't even a problem if you know how to drive.
My 96 lt4 has it, it rarely comes on, unless i nail the gas like a fiend. and the only drawback i see is autoX high speed exits to corners, or BANGING gears in a drag race. Bumps and such usually just turn on the ABS not the ASR.
The ASR only comes on for me if i am pushing the car. Then again, i drive much smoother than most people from road racing and autoX. Jerky drivers and shifts tend to set it off. or if the car is lowered or has overly stiff springs and is bouncing around a lot, then it comes on more.
ASR is just a crude device for 1992. And even if it were up to 2002 standards (I regularly drive a C5 so I know its a LOT better) it still takes all the fun out of the car. I regularly throw long, graceful powerslides with my ride. And instead of doing k-turns with the car its easy to just to snap a 180 spin with a burst of throttle and clutch. Well, of course, ASR won't permit any of this. But the problem is if you get in the habit of taking advantage of all the performance the Vette is capable of by turning it OFF, then eventually the day comes when you forget and instead of a 180 spin you are stairing at Mr. Curb coming at you fast. So I just unplugged mine. Left engine bank. Done in 1 minute. The light comes on warning you of an ASR failure (I won't go into detail here how I took care of that).
And these comments really only apply to the 6-speeds. I really can't imagine playing these games regularly with an auto anyway (with a stock LT1 long block) so I doubt a driver of an automatic would be annoyed by it nearly as much as the stick shift driver is.
the computer takes the driving of the car out of your hands, thats the problem. Its still a good thing for bad weather.

I know what you guys mean about it taking the power away from you in the middle of an intersection though. That's one thing I definitely don't like about it.

Also bad if you r are fish tailing and it kicks in when you are side ways. Can you say "HOLY #$%^"
I'd heard that, too, Old Sport (about it getting you killed) and wondered about it until last week. I pulled out in front of someone :smash: and stepped on it - it was wet out and the ASR kicked in. It completely takes over and won't let you accelerate...I damn near got myself rear-ended. Scared the heck out of me. It wouldn't have gotten me killed, but I sure have more respect for it.
Oddly enough, even with ASR off it seems (on my '96) that a beautiful 45 degree angle slide onto an onramp still seems invoke some type of ignition retard (I don't get the throttle kickback). Does it when kicking the tail out in either direction. Takes a second or two before it'll give ya back the power.
Kinda bums me out 'cause I really enjoy those semi-slow, tire smokin' slides.
I've seen in another thread a lot of people say this system can kill you. How exactly can it kill you?

 I must have a weird 95 cause the only problem I ever had was once I tried to pop the clutch in first and forgot to push the ASR OFF button and I didn't burn rubber  ...so when I feel like being a Bitch  I push the little ASR button and I can smokem in 1st ,2nd, $3rd...its amazing...I've only tried it 2 times for shtis and giggles though...never had any other kind of problem with it...maybe cause I don't drive like a psycho when I'm in the 95...   I mostly drive the 95 like a little "puzzy azz"...now the 67, 427...I'm a "superfreak"...you don't wanna f with me when I'm in that Bitch...
