its slinging a little oil on the underside of the hood. Is this an expensive fix? The AC still works but I'm assuming it wont for long. Its probably leaking R-12 with the oil??

No, it is clutch oil leaking through worn seal, not R12/refridgerent oil.
no, I'm sure you get clutch oil at the blinker fluid place. I'm gonna stock up
you guys are killin' me .....
OK..... i meant the "bearing seal" which is the centerpiece of the clutch !! When this seal leaks , it slings the "bearing grease" all over the place...and if I want to call it clutch oil .....well..... I am going to call it clutch oil !!
MK and others are correct, the compressor seal is leaking. If it's not too bad, yes you can recharge the a/c periodically and be okay, BUT make SURE you add some oil to the system to make up for what is being lost. If you don't, it will ultimately be circulating refrigerant with so little oil, it will wear out(if you're lucky) or blow up the compressor. When the compressor blows you have a REAL mess on your hands because you have to remove all the debris or it will destroy the new compressor.
Sorry Charlie, but the clutch is dry--not oiled. It is Compressor oil leaking past the seal behind the clutch. Nice waffle.
the clutch bearing is a sealed greased bearing and is not lubricated by the refrigerent oil. The refrigerent oil is used to lubricate the compressor only.

At first I thought you just made a simple mistake and we all had a laugh. Now I am convinced it was not a mistake. Show me where someone said that the clutch bearing is oiled by the compressor oil.

You were the one who invented clutch oil.
Generally, I rarely make mistakes 50% of the time !!! I just waffle around until I convince myself that I am right !!!
I thought someone inferred that the clutch bearing was lubbed by the refrigerent oil....
I am now stuck with my "clutch oil" ..... and I will take my spanking
I've seen a guard to go over the AC and belt some where. It might keep the oil off the under side of the hood.
I need one to...
If the compressor rattles when it runs you need to get some more oil in it. I put about 2oz in mine when it gets noisy, about every other summer.
I'm running a drop in R-12 replacement that doesn't need the oil changed and has good cooling properties.
It works for me, my 225k mile 87 has never had the system opened; just some more refridgerant and oil.
Get your license at www.epatest.com or any of the sites at www.epa.gov - buy all you want and try Autozone first since they've been trying to get rid of what noone wants for the last five years.
You can buy it off e-bay but you have to sign a wavier I believe stating your buying it for resale. If the feron police ever stop by tell them you have no idea what hey are talking about. I also would not try mixing Freeze12 with R12 I don't care what anyone sez.

Yes, the sites like epatest that Sun references give the test as an open book test. It costs $15 or $20 and you can then legally buy all the R12 that you wish to melt the polar cap with. It will only take you an hour or two at the most to do the test.
