Default Motor Mount Removal

I'm pulling the LT1 engine (and not the Auto Trans.) out of my '93. I've got all four bolts on the C-Beam out. I've got the cross bolts on the motor mounts out; and, I've got the nuts off of the vertical bolts in the motor mount.

I am stymied on how to get the vertical bolts out of the motor mount. Part of the problem is just seeing them. There is a heat shield made of a silver foil and something like asbestos wrapped around the motor mounts. Should I just cut this shield off and get new ones when I put the car back together? And, how the heck do I get to the vertical bolt?

Thanks for your help,

Larry...

On the engine mounts, all the bolts you took out.....you normally leave in. You remove the nut from the stud that passes thru the cross brace on each side and that's it.

You might want to go buy a Factory Service Manual. It'll be the best $100 you've spent.

I agree, the FSM can be of great assistance!

I just made new covers for my motor mounts last week - the single bolt (stud) you are referring to is on the bottom, not visible. You can see the cross bolt on each mount - it passes through a bracket on the side of the engine (bracket can be seen on the second photo):

Yep!

You are all correct. I read somewhere else that I had to remove the cross bolt. However, the FSM, (which I hadn't read before I posted my question), specifically says exactly what you said. Just remove the nut.

But, if I just remove the nut, how do I lower the engine to get at the upper bell housing bolts, if the motor mount is still attached?

I'm confused.

I removed the lower nut on the mounts, and also removed the cross-bolt on the mounts, jacked up the engine enough to pull the mounts out, then you can lower it.

Excellent - hope the rest goes smoothly, then you can pour yourself a frosty beverage and admire your handiwork!
