I'm going electric.

But I wonder if its ok , after swapping the electric pump for the old mechanical one, to just leave that shaft spinning that used to drive the old water pump, with no load on it ?

Some do, some don't, I didn't. It leaves the possibility for an oil leak without the shaft supported by the water pump.

I left it on for several months with no problems. I did forget to remove the coupler though. When I finally got to swapping the cam I removed it and got someone to weld the hole closed in the timing cover.

Misc. Pics...

I have no idea. That was before the new cam, opti, chain, valve train, oil pan gasket, etc.. I cleaned it a good bit and it has stayed clean now. I guess whatever was leaking is fixed. It looked like it was coming from the TB or manifold. Somewhere in the front.
