Hey guys, just a quick question,
I am thinking of buying a variable speed makita polisher .
Up until now I have only done the vette by hand...
Just wondering if I will get better results with this tool.
I currently use the Meguiars line of products.
thanks for your 2 cents

Back when I was using Meguiars I always applied by hand.. I wouldn't use a buffer.... (i use a better polish now, and apply that by hand, too)
I think your best bet for better results would be a better polish,
such as Liquid Glass, or Zaino. Or even a better wax, like Zymol Wax.
I switched from Meguiars to Zaino, and it was a big improvement on my
dark red vette.
of course I don't use a buffer with Zaino either. Zaino (And other polishes) should be applyed to match the contours of your vehicle (In other words, up andd down the sides, and windshield-to-bumper on the hood. Don't buff polish. :)
I bought a buffer from Griot's Garage a mail order Co. they sell car care products , its a Porter Cable works great. I use it on all my cars does a great job . On the Vette I finish it with Zaino ,on my other cars I use 3M products.
Griots number is 800-345-5789 if you want a catalog, good luck Jim
I use the same Porter Cable buffer sold by Griot's and Meguiar's. Every person on this forum is going to have their own opinion, but I think it works great to apply product with the buffer. I do not use the buffer to remove or finish buff, I only do those steps by hand. If you choose to stay with Meguiar's products (my preference) step up to either Gold Class or Medallion.
When learning how to use it keep the speed down in the 1500 rpm area!
Or you will be repainting the car. Variable buffers are best left to the pro's but if you are wanting to learn try it first on a beater.
O yea and even if you use a Variable buffer you'll have to go over it with a orbital buffer to get the swirls out! :yesnod:
Good luck and have fun. It's very rewarding!
I've used Meguiar's #1 (medium cleaner), #2 (fine-cut cleaner), #7 (polish), and Medallion (wax) on all the Corvettes I've had. The first three cars, I applied the products by hand.
When I bought my current car, I also bought a Porter-Cable model 7336 random orbital buffer. It's the same model that Meguiar's sells under their own name. I got it for $100 at Lowe's.
I've been very happy with the results. I think I get better results using those same four products, and it's faster and easier too. Using it on the lowest speed (2500 RPM) doesn't cause any hazing or anything - plus it's slow enough that it doesn't sling material onto the windows and such.
