Default maybe a new sender is in order??

While driving my 86 home the other night my gas guage started dropping from hlf a tank, right down to reserve, to empty. My first thought was, crap I blew a fule line, and now the engine will burst into flames. I got off the highway and popped the hood, no leaks there or under the car. I pulled to a station just to top it off anyway, and as soon as I pulled in the guage started to refill! It took about a half a tank, and was fine the rest of the way home. On peculiar thing though, I did have a reoccurence of my interior lights staying on, so I pulled the 'ctsy' fuse for the day; and when leaving the station the engine was over 218 and the fan wouldn't come on. It got up over 226 before I got on the highway and was able to get it cooled down. I am wondering if the damp weather is starting up the electrical gremlins again, or if I really need a new fuel sender; it is probably original. All the electrics were working just fine when I was driving the car more, it has been sitting for a few years now; but now out of nowhere little things wrong again. I do intend to cut out the 'delay timer' for the interior lights; seems like nothing but trouble to me, any other ideas would be great.
