just read another thread about shifters. please keep in mind that i have a 0 (zero) IQ on the inner workings of tranny's. From the other thread i take it that Hurst is the shifter of choice. about what does the Hurst shifter cost?
1 week after buying my vet, (96 LT4), my first use of my extended warranty was to have my clutch and flywheel replaced. i have noticed though that the actual shifting isn't what i expected. i've been wondering if my next warranty service was going to be a tranny. however, maybe my need is for a Hurst shifter.
my symptoms:
1. sometimes, (not too often though), when i try to shift into 1st, it won't go, so i let off the clutch and reapply the clutch then it goes into 1st.
2. shifting into 3rd, many times, seems to need a harder push than going into any of the other gears.
3. shifting into 4th seems to have 2 clicks, (for a lack of a better description), you feel the first "click" but it's not in gear, pull just a little bit more and you feel the second "click" and you're in 4th.
all the other gears feel fine. are my symptoms a shifter problem or are they in fact a tranny problem ???
yea. slave. the clutch is activated by hydrolics. there is a little master cylinder and what is called the slave at the other end. when you apply pressure, it forces this little arm to push out the throwout arm...
when it does not work right, the clutch won't engage correctly.
You should be able to pick up a Hurst shifter for $125 - $130 plus shipping. The install, if you have it done, will go for about 2-3 hours of labor, at least that was my case.
Buy the Hurst from Chris Rinehart. He is the engineer who invented the shifter, and sells them for the lowest price, I think it's $120 shipped. Great guy too by the way!
It sounds like the synchros are having trouble (due to tranny fluid, clutch hydrualics, etc). All the ZFs use the same synchros so I really doubt it's an early-vs-late model issue.
Ditto, change the tranny fluid first, it's pretty cheap.
