The engine won't start unless you push in the clutch. Is that a switch or what does that and where is it located. I hear a click from somewhere but I can't pin down the spot. Is that thng inside the car or outside.

It is a switch near the pivot area of the clutch pedal. Take the knee panel off, turn upside doen and you'll see the switch. There might be another one for the cruise control too, I can't remember. On my car, I just bypasses the thing and made sure I wasn't in gear starting the car. This enabled me to start in neutral without pushing the clutch in.

That is the Clutch Start Switch which is inside the car. Sounds like your car is working as designed.
