So, my check engine light likes to come on only while on the freeway, after hitting 60mph after 10mins of driving. The code turned out to be the EGR, how serious is this? Is it as simple as replacing a sensor? My 'Vette has aftermarket exhaust on it if that helps.
You need to get the Genuine GM service manual, go to the emissions and drivability section and find the DTC in question, which i believe is 32, and follow the steps it suggests in order to find out where your problem resides.
At a guess, i would say it may be the EGR vac solenoid, but you really need to go through the fault finding path as it appears in the manual to be sure, cause it could be traced back to a wiring fault, or even the ECM having some sort of issues (as highly unlikely as i think that last one will be...)
It makes sense that you only get the fault after you are driving on the highway becayse that is when the EGR is supposed to open. For some reason seems like yours is not. It could be either the EGR itself or, the EGR solenoid, or, the vacuum lines between the plenum, the EGR solenold, or, the EGR valve.
I will look through my service manual in the morning about the EGR. I'm going to attempt cleaning my fuel sending unit with the aide of my trusty assistant (the fiance). I've looked up at Ecklers and Rockauto the prices for EGR Valve and Solenoids, eh.
Everything checked out OK, even the EGR valve opened and closed smoothly. I finally decided to just change the EGR valve for the heck of it and problem solved!
