Hey all, have a 96 LT-1 with a starting problem. When I turn the key to start the engine, nothing happens (all lights come on, radio etc). I turn the key back to off and re-try and it will start. However, that was a few days ago. Now it seems to be getting worse. Battery is fairly new and has plenty of juice. I am thinking maybe the ignition switch or starter? Any suggestions??
Thanks in advance!

Sounds like the switch mounted at the base of the column.
I say that because it appears to correct itself after you retry the key.
There are other components on the starter circuit such as the inhibitor switch on the shifter and the starter enable relay
Is there any noise at all from starter; clicking etc?
If you had to wait 5 min it would be VATS related.
Try checking for power with a test light at the started switching side of it, when you crank it over.
If your getting power tap on the starter with a small hammer to see if it kicks in.

Yeah, when I turn the key I get one click from the starter. I dont have to wait 5 minutes to try again. I tried my spare key this morning with the same result. If I jiggle the key a bit it tends to start but I dont know if that is just coincidence.
Yeah, when I turn the key I get one click from the starter. .
In that case, control power is getting to the starter solenoid. If battery is good as you say I would be checking the battery+ to starter cable and batt- cable to the bellhousing connections.
When it won't crank and you don't hear the starter solenoid click, then unplug the clutch safety switch (gear selector sw at base of shifter if auto) and jump the socket and try a crank. It sounds like your VATS is working ok. Also, if you only hear the starter solenoid click, then you need some starter motor repair. At the end of the starter solenoid stroke two large copper contacts are forced together which switch current to the starter motor and they get blackened and pitted and eventually don't make a low enough resistance connection to supply the 100+ amps the starter motor requires. If this happens, keep hitting crank and if the starter cranks, this is the sign you need new copper contacts. You can also test the battery by measuring the battery terminal voltage while cranking. It should not fall below 9.0 volts or the battery needs charging, battery cables need cleaning, or the battery is at the end of its life. You can tell the state of charge in your battery by measuring its terminal voltage, 12.0 volts and below, discharged, 12.9 volts and above, fully charged and linear in between. If your battery is discharged, charge it up overnight with a battery charger. Also, it won't hurt to remove your battery cables (neg first) and clean the cable lugs, battery posts, bolts and replace (neg cable last). Harbor Freight has a digital VOM (voltmeter, ohmeter, milliameter) for $8, $1.99 with a recent coupon and it is a decent test meter.
If you hear a click at the starter then it could be the solenoid contact.
If you remove the starter then the cover from the solenoid end you will see a large copper washer. Clean it up with sandpaper and get a little more life while you save for $100 starter.
