Default Reverse Lock-out problem

I have a 1992 6-speed coupe. A couple of weeks ago I went to back out of a parking spot, and when I pulled up on the reverse lockout ring it started to pull with its regular tension, but then snapped loose.

I thought the allen screw on the ring might have loosened from the metal rod, but when I removed the shift **** to inspect, the ring is tightly secured. It seems that the rod itself has detached from whatever it connects to at the bottom of the shifter.

I'm not really sure how the lock-out works... what does it connect to? How is it fastened? Can it be easily disabled? (I've always found it kind of annoying anyway) Can that create any other issues?

I appreciate your help!

Were I you, I'd give ZFDoc a shout and see if he could hook me up with a '96 crash through reverse selector to replace the little pull ring type on ours.

To prevent unwanted shift to reverse, say on a 5 to 6 shift, it requires a lot more pressure than a normal shift. It must be extra big springs. I don't know the internals though, just guessing at them. But there would be no lock lever or pull ring. You'd just pull the lever harder.
