Recently made a big mistake of changing the exhaust system. Changed from a stock exhaust to a true duel exhaust using a kit from "Mid-America" that replaces the pre-cats,and the main cat with two pipes running from the manifold to the mufflers. Mufflers were "Flowmasters" built for a vette.Question-now I have a 1987 vette that does not sound like a vette. Just kinda loud exhaust, would installing a equallizer pipe somewhere between the two pipes help out with making it sound more mello or do I need to reinstall the exhaust pipe making the exhaust run from from exhaust manifold to one pipe then out to two mufflers. Also anyone had experience with the flomaster mufflers being too loud?
Use this as an excuse to rebuild your engine :D If loud (as you said) wasn't your thing...then put a more restrictive exhaust sytem on offset by a higher output engine.
I took my Flowmasters off because of the interrior resonace and used Hooker Aerochamber mufflers. Still had the resonance ... but it was less than the Flowmasters. Also, from what I have read on the forum an equalize tube does help with resonance. Check out some of the archived posts on this subject.
I have the same system on my 87 vette. I added two crossover pipes just because of this. One crossover in the rear, and one in the front just after the trans pan.
You know what I think...it's crap. Sounds like crap. Too loud...too much resonance.
I have a 93 cat back system in my garage right now, I'm going to buy headers and replace the whole system. Would have cost me less in the first place to do it this way.
The "vette" flowmasters are usually the crappy 3 chamber ones, makes it sound like a Mustang. I've got a sound clip in my signature of Dual 2 chamber flowmasters, custom x-pipe, and hooker headers. See what you think. I've never really thought about it, does it sound like a vette to you? I know it doesn't sound like a mustang.
