Default Tuned Headers?

I've been debating between the Hooker Super Competition headers and the Hedman Elite Hedders and I remember reading somewhere someone said something along the lines of "go with the super comps because their tuned headers" what did he mean by that?

Tuned headers are ones where the lengths of the primaries are exactly the same. The idea is to get the pulses evenly spaced as they enter the collector.

However, primaries don't have to be perfect lengths -- especially with our lesser-built motors.

For the most part, Hedman's are worth the savings -- especially if you have a lower hp motor and want power to be enhanced at the lowest rpms possible -- because they are 1 5/8" vs the 1 3/4" Hookers. (BTW: Header's don't scavenge much until 3k rpms -- but a smaller header will work better in lower rpms.)

Oh yeah... The Hedman's are thicker guage steel with thicker flanges. For durability on a street-car, this also has an advantage.

Alright good, I was looking to save money. I've got about 1k for the whole exhaust and am going with the Pypes system. That gives me about a 200 dollar breathing room for AIR delete pully/header gaskets.

Wouldnt bother with 1-3/4 headers on an L98, stick with the 1-5/8

I am pretty sure this will start an uproar, but tuned headers, in the sense we are talking about are "tuned" for a specific engine/car assembly. Like a L98/Corvette. Not a lot of science involved.

If they fit Hurrah!! The whole "tuned" thing is somewhat questionable and I think a marketing comment in regard to mass produced stuff.

Tuned headers are built with Runner/ Collector geometry best suited to the engines firing order, cam, flow, blah, Blah, BLAH! It goes on forever.

So.... I would say; " 6 of one or 1/2 dozen of the other" . Best price on a either wins.

But, that said, what will you do with the '88?.... Drags? Cruise In? Want the look and sound? Then still go with the best deal on a tried and true set.

Romping-stomping on the "twisties" in the Foot Hills or Road racing? L98 would probably like something different.
