Default Has anyone installed a windshield?

I've done it on other projects with the locking gasket or the sticky seal. But I hesitate on the C4 due to the $200 seal or weatherstrip that I hear will most likely be ruined and have to be replaced.
Any experiences or information will be appreciated.

Had windshield replaced on son's 87 last spring.
Trust me, a vette is the last vehicle you would ever want to do a DIY windshield job on. The trim around the windshield will also need replaced.
Had it done by a place in Lima OH:
http://www.allservglass.com/auto-gla...vice-ohio.html
Worth the drive up there for you. They came highly recomended by other vette owners and when I asked them about doing ours they knew exaclty what was required and that it wasn't a typical install. They used all genuine GM parts (other than the glass itself)
Mike is the tech that performed the work.
Extremely professional shop, top notch service all the way. Mike took all the time needed to make sure the job was perfect.
State Farm covered it for the $100 deductable, I think the total bill to State Farm was $1200 or so, don't remember exaclty.

^^Sadly, that is the way I heard it as well. I'm certainly a DIY type, so I looked into this one pretty extensively (that was about two years ago). I don't remember the particulars exactly, all I remember is I had better back away from that one and hope a good rock chips the snot out of my sandblasted glass.......

Speaking of which, are rock chips fixable?

Here are some additional windshield threads that tell a
cautionary tale

CentralCoaster 2007.03.01No one deserves the grief Kevin went through on that one.

.

Edit: remove lame attempt at humour that carried the prospect
of instilling hard feelings.

They are....the use a resin/vacuum impregnation process to fill your cracks and chips...the visual anomaly would be huge if it were eyeglasses but since it is a window far enough away from your eye it is barely noticeable.

Plan on spending about $100 getting one fixed.....and it only takes about an hour.

Yup....and to my surprise "bogus/Andy" used McJacks Corvettes in Santa Ana to get a windshield replaced with stellar results.

Default Has anyone installed a windshield?

I chose not to attempt DIY for my '87...in April this year, I received a quote for windshield replacement for $310.00...plus $65.00 trim cost. When installer arrived, he then informed me the weather-stip would cost an additional $350.00. Total=$725.00 - This was in SLO Ca.

Needless to say, I claimed andtold them to leave...and take their windshield with them.

Since I was driving to Utah the next day - somewhat concerned about the windshield - after arriving, decided to take the car into local shop and ask about replacement. After 30 minute discussion, decided to have them replace the windshield.

The TOTAL cost was $188.15 - Pilkington windshield and installation. They used the same trim and stipping.

The company was TechnaGlass in St. George, Utah. I was not looking for a cheap replacement, I was looking for an Honest Company!

Almost 3 months later, no problems whatsoever...Just my experience.

The glass cost can be reasonable relative to the other components
often required for the job.

Prices mentioned below are 3 years old at GMPD.
Windshield backing molding????

Here's the list again with prices from GMPD as of 2006-01-07

p/n 14049243 GM LIST: $37.97 OUR PRICE: $22.41 DESCRIPTION: RET ASM
p/n 14049244 GM LIST: $37.97 OUR PRICE: $22.41 DESCRIPTION: RET ASM
p/n 10236368 GM LIST: $23.80 OUR PRICE: $14.00 DESCRIPTION: WINDSHIELD SEAL
p/n 10268887 GM LIST: $322.10 OUR PRICE: $190.04 DESCRIPTION: W/S RF/LI
p/n 14049033 GM LIST: $217.95 OUR PRICE: $128.59 DESCRIPTION: UPPER WINDSHIELD MOLDING
p/n 14049031 GM LIST: $172.98 OUR PRICE: $102.06 DESCRIPTION: LEFT SIDE WINDSHIELD MOLDING
p/n 14049032 GM LIST: $172.98 OUR PRICE: $102.06 DESCRIPTION: RIGHT SIDE WINDSHIELD MOLDING

A quickie windshield replacement can be done where the shop may
salvage all the existing seals and just use plenty of adhesive to
put in the new glass the first time. According to those who claim
to know, the second replacement is harder and the trim may be
more likely to be damaged because the adhesive bonds to it.
In the post above there are several links to threads with additional
advice & comments about C4 windshield replacement.

Damn, my brother just had a windshield replaced on his 2002 Montey Carlo for $150. I'm wouldn't spend $1k on a windshield replacement.

Though, I've heard the C4 is different compard to other windshield installs.

Do they really have to pull the weatherstripping off?

I have cracked mine in my 89. To the left of the passenger wiper arm was a cracked up piece of the cowl under the windshield. I caulked it with sealant, and stuck a wedge under the windshield to keep the chipped part down while the sealant set. I guess from moving the metal wedge around I ended up causing a 2 inch crack from the bottom of the windshield. It looks like the crack is on the bottom part of the windshield. It really isn't too noticable as it is in the black part of the windshield, but I hope it doesn't spread.

A monte carlo windshield has nothing to do with a C4, totally immaterial.

No, you don't HAVE to replace all the stuff that must be replaced..it all depends on what kinda job you want.....a glue gobbled torn weather strip and bent molding hack job where the windshield ahs slid down too far, or it replaced right.

I am sure there are plenty of outfits that would glob one in for $200.
When I was calling around qualifying companies to do this I got quotes as low as $200...and when I asked them about replacing the trim, molding, etc they had NF idea what I was talking about. Asked them how many C4 vettes they do and they claimed all the time. Bozo bin for them. One told me if they found anything else I needed they would bill me for it.

I really didn't care if this job cost $200 or $20,000. I just wanted it done correctly. It was covered by comphrehensive insurance (and why anyone would not carry that on a C4 is a total mystery) so I was out $100 for the deductable.

So, how much is the windshield install costing you?

Thanks for all the help. I've had a quote for $400 with a new seal.
I think I'll look at removing the metal trim then go from there. I guess the rule "do no harm" applies here.

Those prices have since doubled, if not more since these were pulled. If you bought all these parts at list price right now, then you are looking at $2k just in parts. Not counting labor and other materials. No way am I spending over $400 for an A pillar weatherstripping.
