Cruising @ 70-75 mph with AC temperature gauge registering a little over mid range. Ambient temperature about 100. Usually registers below mid range without AC. Slowing down in traffic and stopping for lights the temperature would move to about ¾ range. Turning off AC and moving up to 60-70mph the temperature gauge would go back to little over mid range with AC on. This type of driving over a three-hour period. Then after cruising @ 70mph AC for about 45 minutes temperature gauge a little over mid range engine begin to loose power and stopped. It would crank right up and idle for 30 seconds to a minute then stop. After about 1 hour it started right up and I drove it about 10 miles to a shop without any issues. Had a tow service haul it home. It seems to running OK now. But I’m a little leery about driving it until I know what caused the problem.
Would the higher than normal temperature ranges have caused the engine to stop?
I have read Lars Grimsrud’s article on cleaning the radiator and it does need cleaning which I will do today. Will also check the fans. Should I check anything else while I’m at it?
Check the fuel pressure to see if the its a dying fuel pump. If its never been replaced I would consider this. Check fusible links to make sure nothing is getting burnt up, especially around the starter.

Same thing happened in my 88...It ended up being the fuel pump.
Radiator removed, cleaned, reinstalled. Drove in city traffic for an hour ambient temp about 95 temp gauge well under mid-range and no engine issues. Will check the fuel pressure this weekend.
By the way noticed that with the AC on the volts dropped from what I think would be about 16volts to 12-13 volts. Could this a potential problem?
It's wonderful to have so much information available on the forum not to mention the immediate advice from forum members.
