I came up with a can of R-12 but I want to add some oil also. Its been leaking at the compressor over the years and i'm sure it needs some. Looking for ideas on how to add it. My plan was, the hose I have to add the R-12 is about 2 feet long and I was going to fill that hose with the oil and then hook up the hose and can and do the charge, possibly stopping at the half can point and refilling the hose with oil again. My thought was this would draw the oil in just like it draws in the R-12??? Any ideas would be appreciated
My recollection is that it goes in the same hole with the same hose.....I'll refrain from stating anything further as my A/C repair techniques are usually under fire.
When doing a full Evac and Recharge..I have used the vacuum created in the system by the "evac" to pull the oil (usually about 2 oz) through the same "charge" hose used to add freon. I have a cartidge I use on the job when just topping off the AC (it holds 2 oz) which is pushed in by the freon charge and the compressor helps to suck it in. I think in your case I'd also check some parts stores.... years ago I used to see small cans of oil charge under pressure which worked w/the same "can tap" used for freon. Not saying your idea wouldn't work...just not sure how accurate you could be. JMO
It doesn't sound if you are planning on evacuating, only topping off the system. Under these conditions, an injector is the best way. I doubt that you will find an R12 oil charge can anywhere.
That said, adding oil to a system without complete flushing, new R/D and evacuation is a guessing game at best. Sometimes you will lose a lot of oil with a leak and other times maybe not any. Did you find an oily residue at the suspected location of the leak?
its leaking at the compressor, slinging a small amount of oil on the underside of the hood. This has been over the course of 23 years. Its a common place for a leak. I dont think the leak is severe but thats a long time so I'd like to add some oil when I add the R-12. I would like to get at least 3-4 oz. back in. I'm thinking filling the hose twice will be enough, just wondered if the system will have enough suction to pull the oil in??

Since you are just looking for a bandaid solution, your idea should work. Fill up the yellow hose with oil, then let a can of R-12 push it in the low side. Repeat as necessary. Put your can of R12 in a pot of hot water to increase the internal pressure. This will help give a "boost" the R12 and oil.
That's all well and good, but this is an R12 that he is wisely keeping as an R12 system.
The system only contains 8 ounces of oil when properly charged. From what you are saying I think that 3 or 4 ounces would be too much. I would put in a couple of ounces tops. That said, it's a guessing game.
did it this weekend, the hose held 3 oz. of oil and it took the 12 oz. can of R-12. Worked like a charm and it blows ice cubes again! The hardest part of the job is getting your hands on the R-12. Thanks for the input guys
