i have an automatic 700R4 86 vette i am looking for an aftermarket shifter that will fit in my console and look pretty good as well i do a lot of racing so i am trying to find a good one so i don't miss any gears :chevy
No one makes one at the moment that will fit "well". Some have adapted generic units, but they don't fit too well with the stock console trim. Hurst is planning to produce one but delivery is far off.
Ditto what Chris said. I put in the B&M Megashifter. It is the console model for the 82-93 Camaro/Firebirds. As you can see the boot does not fit. I have shown the car to a guy that does custom hot-rod interior (this guy has had several of his interiors featured in many magazines) and he said it would be no problem for him to make a nice leather boot for it. He said about $50 is what it would cost me. I just havn't taken the time to get the car to him yet. I really like using the shifter tho. Very positive shifting. It looks kinda high in the picture but it is very natural and in a good spot for me. It wasn't real difficult to put in. Just have to take some time and do some cutting and bolting. If a dummy like me could do it, anybody can.
Take a look at my modified shift gate. I got a used stock unit for $50 and used a Dremel to cut notches in the top of the arch in the gate. These provide steps so that I now have to depress the button to pull down into a lower gear. And on the upshift I can feel the step change as well as hear it, even over my exhaust note.
There is no lockout safety, till reverse, on upshifts but there is on downshifts. It is a real improvement over the stock unit and it looks bone stock from up top.
I am not very mechanical when it comes to cutting things like that how would it cost me if i went out and brought a used one and sent it to you to have that done.l
