Re: L98 with "ticking" noise.. (devilfish)
A small amount of ticking in a L98 would normally be attributed to the injection system. Probably normal, unless this is something that just developed.
Somewhere around the valve cover area. Hard to tell.. I think it sounds more on the driver side, but that could be wrong. Its hard to point out exact the locatation. The speed of the "ticking" sounds follow RPM. Its not a mettalic sound, sounds more like a mecanical realy going on/off fast..
I would definitely empty that tank... I would think a little ticking noise after sitting for that long would be normal. Just be sure to give it a good oil change right away.
I had the same problem. Does the noise quiet down after your engine warms up? I replaced my fuel injectors and roller rockers at the same time. After that, the sound disappeared. It could be either one. I can't tell you which one for sure.
Mine ticks loud enough to hear a little even with the hood shut-- had it to a guy today who worked at a GM dealership for 15 years from 83--- and he said nothing even though she was ticking away-- ive been told its the injectors.
My injectors tick like &#$%&#$&! At idle I can hear the injectors over engine w/ no pre-cats from 20 feet. They are old '88 injectors so I don't worry. Sounds like lifter tick, but it's injectors on mine. I have a set of LT1 injectors I am going to get rebuilt, hopefully that will quiet the engine a bit, otherwise, true duals w/ no cats.
yeah it sounds less when the engine is hot.
How bad could it be if it is one of my lifters? Is it hard to change ? Can I somehow check that it really is the lifters? Can i brake the engine if run my car like this?
I have a tick also. Most noticable when cold. Did not think of the injector being that noisy. Need to get to listen closer to the noise. I was thinking of adjusting the rocker arms, because that is what it sounds like to me. A small exhaust leak would have a similar sound.
A side question, how long would you expect the timing chain to last? This a 90 with a stock L98 with roller lifters and 108k miles. Have been considering changing it for preventative maintenance. In the past I have seen a knocking sound coming from a loose timing chain.

My 91 injectors tick somewhat loud. Seems to be a GM standard. My LT-1 equipped 93 Z/28 did the same thing.
