Default Gets Hot and oh yeah heads

I put in a generic 160 thermostat and my car now gets to 200 degrees plus on the highway. Granted this really only happens when its 100 plus outside but even when it was that hot outside the 195 thermostat seemed to keep it around 195 on the highway. I drained about a gallon and a half of fluid out to do the install and it was a pretty nasty brown color and the overflow tank was gross but I cleaned it out really good.
Do I need to flush my system. This is a third hand car with just over 100k it may have never been done. Also it causes alot of blue smoke when i start it but soon goes away I understand this is probably the valve guides and I just assume replace the whole heads for a performance upgrade. Does anyone other than edelbrock make heads with the center bolt valve covers. I'm going to keep the TPI no matter what. I think it looks cool.

most areas I've seen discussed are to remove leaves and hay from in front of the radiator and make sure the fans are all working at a reasonable point in time/temp. I'd add to it to pull the gooseneck off and see if there are any casting flashings on its underside. I used an expensive 160 stat and run in the low 170's on hundred degree days when moving. Radiator clog is another possibility that should be checked. If its not good, chances are high that also the head gaskets have some hardness buildup. Clean antifreeze will help and also may dissolve a little of it if you change more frequently than normal. As a radical extremest, I might be tempted to try some water softener resin bed cleaner at a low concentration for a few days, then do another flush if radiator shows scaling. Its typically an EDTA salt and if reasonably pure I'd run it at 0.05% but it probably sounds too weird for the average Joe. good luck.

I also noticed the fan in front of the rad. this thing is not in any repair manual I own. What is it good for other than blocking airflow to the rad. It doesnt come on when I turn on the backside fan manually through diagnostics or the switch I wired in to turn my fan on when I want.

Your system needs to be flushed out, has nothing to do with the stat. Id pull the rad. out and blast the fins out with water while youre at it and get qall the tiny pebbles that get lodged in there out.
Makes a NIGHT and day difference.

With regards to the smoke - This sounds more like the valve seals, The guides on these heads supposedly last a very long time.

Relatively easy fix - replace seals (maybe springs and add roller rockers while you are there).

New heads are a GREAT option for power, but unless you address the intake (even if it is porting and large tube runners) and exhaust, it will not help you that much.

If I understand you right, you're saying it ran cooler with the 195 thermostat than it does the 160. I'd guess the new isn't openning completely.
The valve seal can be replaced without removing the heads.

If its 100F outside, and you've been driving for 20-30min, its going to get to those temps no matter what stat is in it.

All the 160 will do to help is make it take longer to get to that hot, and that might lower your average running temps, it wont force it to run cooler once youve been driving a little while.

You should flush it out once and look at the link to see other things which should be done if you want it to run cooler.
