A 383 stroker motor is made by installing a crank from a 400 block (3.75" strock) and putting it in a 350 block that is bored .030 over. :D

Basically what is above - a 383 is a new crankshaft (3.75" stroke vs. stock 3.48") and a 4.03" bore (instead of stock 4.00"). This will at a minimum require new pistons, and new rods are normally used also.

When figuring your total cost don't forget to include labor on R&R of the motor (unless you can do it yourself) as well as other ancilliary items (custom programming, fuel system, etc.). Also don't ignore your heads/camshaft. A 383 with stock induction will not make much more power then stock - it will just do it at a lower rpm (with more torque).

What kind of stroker you can make with $4k entirely depends on how much you can have the labor done for, and how much machine/porting work you want done. You can get an all forged rotating assembly for $1500-10,000 (or what ever you want to pay). Top end stuff will be a few hundred. Machine work can be anything from $500- again .. $10,000 + if ya want to.

I went with a cast crank and everything else forged. It and other parts together totalled around $1500. Machine work was around $600. Labor was $750 to R&R the engine, which is usually unheard of.

$4K should make a killer 350, but a not-so hot 383, not in an L98 anyways. The LT-1's are easier to program and more suited for the bigger cubes. A 350 is much more feasible unless you really want to get into spending money.

You can probably get a quality stroker 383 built (cast crank, forged rods, pistons which good to about 550hp) with the machine work $2500. If you paying somebody to the Removal and Replacement of the engine, putting on the heads, and the little small stuff, your going to eat up the rest of the money. If you can do the R&R work yourself, you can put some work into the heads, cam and porting the intake (if you have an L98)

BTW what year do you have? A MAF car ECM will respond better to the changes. Why do you want to do a stroker (is your engine worn out), a top end setup will net you more hp.

I would be paying someone to do the work for me.
And ya my car has 134k miles on it, and i want to add hp, but I feel the only safe way would be just to rebuild and build up.
I hear its not smart to add nos, or SC to a high milage engine.
So why not just do a rebuild and a build up?

$4K is plenty of money- either do the ZZ4 350 or check out Speedo-Motive's site for short block 383's- chances are, your heads are fine.... just depends on how much of the work you want to do

Well, here is what I have spent this year on my '88 to give you an idea.

383 short block-Scat cast crank, Eagle I beam rods, Speed Pro hypers, new oil pan, double roller timing set, dampener, and flywheel, all balanced, -$1,930

Heads-new in box, but used, Air Flow Research 190's-$1,200

Comp Magnum roller rockers, custom roller cam and lifters,pushrods-$700

Full Lingenfelter Super Ram, ported, used-$1,000

Lingenfelter billet throttle body, used -$300

Hooker Super Comp headers, coated, 2 1/2" dual exhaust-$1,000

Dana 44 with 3.07's used-$440

Spicer U-joints-$120

Raptor 2,600 stall converter, new in box, but used -$150

Belts, hoses, fluids, seals, plugs, cap and rotor, thermostat-$150

Nitto Drag radials and 17" Epsilon wheels, used -$250

Simpson Voyager Helmet-used $125

So, doing all the work myself and shopping wisely, I should have a pretty stout car for a little over $7,300. Unfortunately, this is what it costs to go fast with a durable, reliable, matched combination.:( A lot of people don't want to admit what they have spent on their cars but that is what I have spent, so far.........

I would just buy the heads, accel 219, SR or MR, headers. Wait until you have more money to do a good rebuild job.

I would say intake, cam, exhaust. Look at L98 Terror's car. That has a 350 and has been in the 11's on drag radials.

WOW! Please someone point out the bad points about that motor!

Hey does anyone make a special 383 stroker crank that doesn't require the block modifications that a true 400 crank does?
Isn't it true that when you do a 350 to 383 you have to do some sort of grinding on the inside of the block due to clearance issues of the longer stroke?
What other sorts of gory details are involved in doing a 383?
