Default Device inside distributor

When taking the dist cap off, I broke a piece of plastic from the device with the wiring coming into it from outside. Standing on the pass side looking down, it's in the front part approx 3 o'clock. I'll post a pic as soon as I can figure out how. Do I need to be concerned? Also mine C4 has starting to run ragged, although I'm still getting 29 - 30 mpg according to the computer. It's surging at idle when it warms up and seems to want to quit. First thought is the TPS, although reading the forum, I'm going to check the resistance on the injectors.

the idle problem is probably due to the idle air control valve needs to be cleaned, or a vacuum leak, and the IAC can't keep up with the extra unregulated air in the manifold.
Clean your throttle body and check for vacuum leaks.

The broken plastic was probably from wire separator that keeps the wires apart when the enter the distributor. Mine has been broken for years. I wouldn't worry about it.

Just make sure you get any bits of plastic out of there. I had a piece of plastic from one of the connetors get lodged between the rotor and cap. It sheared the screws off the rotor and bent the heck out of the rotor contactor. Amazingly, the car ran fine but sounded like a rod knocking.

Thank you, the throttle body does need to be cleaned and I think I found a potential vac leak. Changing the oil at the moment. Trying to finish before the rain. Still sounds like a rod knock when warmed up.

I had the same problem with the plastic breaking off. Just clean out any plastic and I used that new stuff that looks like putty but drys into a rock. I was worried about moisture if I left a open hole.
