Recently, after getting a code 34, I have been getting a long cranking condition. I usually have a little puff of smoke at start up (valve seals) but yesterday a slight puff of black. Seems to be a smell of fuel also. I cleaned the MAF and throttle body after the code 34. Could that have something to do with the black smoke? Code 34 hasn't returned and car idles and runs fine.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Possibly injectors leaking down flooding the engine.Originally Posted by guido7834
Mostly hot start after sitting a bit.
Starting with the throttle open shuts off injector pulse so no extra fuel added while cranking.
I have the same problem but only when it's cold. I have a procharger LT1
It just seems to be getting worse. I can hear the supplemental fuel pump kick on and off before I crank so I believe that's working. I'll have to put a fuel pressure gauge on it.
I didn't mean to jump in but I was hoping this was a cold start problem

Try a hot start after it has fully warmed up and then sat a short time.Originally Posted by guido7834
Today, after sitting overnight and all day, she fired right up with foot OFF throttle. Seems to be intermittant.

Tried that today, cranked a wee bit longer but not nearly as bad as the first time this happened. Let it sit again and fired right up.Originally Posted by rodj

Tried to start her up today, and won't start. Turns over but won't start. Fuel issue maybe? No codes this time.Originally Posted by guido7834

Forgot one small detail. It did fire right up at first, and stalled Imediately. Then it wouldn't start. Could it have something to do with the code 34 I was getting previously?(MAF) Maybe relays? I am trying to look it up in my FSM, but any help is appreciatedOriginally Posted by guido7834

If you turn the key from off to run and don't hear the fuel pump then it's the fuel pump relay causing your long cranking condition as the oil pressure sending switch will power the pump only after 5 PSI oil pressure is detected from the cranking.
Need to check fuel pressure.
Do you have pressure ;key on? (pump working )
Does it hold after key turned off ? ( injectors not leaking down )
Diagnostic procedures are in the FSM

Changed fuel pump relay, checked fuse and still no start. Will have to find pressure testing procedure in the FSM, although not sure I know what I am doing with that!
