i have a 1993 lt1 with 95000 miles on it. car has been running great driven almost daily for about 3 months now. my daughter was driving it the other day and it died at a stop sign, car restarted and went for about four miles and died again this time traveling down the highway and would not start had to have it towed! never done anything to the motor have had this car about six years and it sometimes will set for several weeks without being driven. at the garage still could not start the car first thought it was the fuel pump but pulled the fuses for the fuel pump cleaned them and car fired up and will set and idle for 15 or 20 minutes then dies. any suggestions where to start. any suggestions about a good repair manuel for this car which one.
Best check the fuel pressure to start with, then check the injectors.
Check the cat converters, although i would think youd have noticed if they were starting to plug up.
Check for spark, check the air filter for air flow, and also see if it will start when you hold the throttle open abit.
I reckon though it will probably be something other than what ive listed above, so when you get it to the stage that it wont start, see what youre missing from the AIR / FUEL / SPARK equation.
Also while youre at it, get a paper clip and check the DTCs, if there are any, post them back here and the module they came from.
The ONLY service manual you should get or trust is the Genuine GM service manual for the 1993 yr model.
Sounds exactly like what happened to mine a while back...
I followed the diagnostic flow charts and the problem was with the coil and ICM..
Replaced those and it fired right up...
I was going to suggest the ICM in my comments, i wrote that in a rush, but youre certainly aiming in the right dirrection with that Epimax, and considering the 20 minute run time at idle then dead, heat into the ICM or the coil could expose the weakness.
If that is the case and either of those two pop up as it, when there is no start, there should be no spark, unless it decides it will spark, just spark all over the place ***** nilly....
Check your coil and ICM (ignition control module). My '92 died suddenly (without warning) and it turned out my coil went ****-up and took my ICM with it.
Crank, no-start condition just like yours.
I replaced both and the car fired right up and ran like new money.
The magnetic field collapses on every spark and produces back EMF which the ICM is designed to withstand. If the spark coil has a turn to turn short, THEN the ICM looks into a low resistance load and overheats the power transistor in the ICM and this causes the ICM to fail.
Thats true, but current and resistance are inversely proportional, less resistance due to shorted turns means more current, and a much harder back emf which will more than likely blow the diode that is in place to stop the normal amount of back emf.
