So, I've pretty much replaced eveything on my ABS system but the actual pump itself. I can get a replacement, but it looks like a horribly big job to replace it. Is this recomended as a DIY job, I'm kind of a novice when it comes to mechanics.
I assume that I'm gonna have to bleed the brakes and stuff, do I need the car up on ramps, will I have to take the wheels off etc? Is there someone else local who will be willing to help me.
Or shall I just take to to a local dealer and get them to do it?
What kind of problem are you having?, You will have to remove the wheels at some point to make sure it's all bleed out but the replacement is all done through the well behind the drivers seat, not realy that hard of a job, but I am wondering just what the problem is, unless the punp has been under water they are very reliable.
Well, after I bought the car I noticed that the ABS didn't seem to be working, so I replaced all the bulbs in the console and sure enough the ABS light was on.
Anyway, I had a look at the ABS system, and it looks like some of it has had a LOT of water on it at some stage, a few of the wires were rusted through, so I fexed those. Then I took the harness off to check the ABS computer, it was hosed so I bought a new one - still no luck. I checked the relays later and found that they were also rusted through - so I replaced them too. The only thing left if the pump.
I guess I need to replace it unless I can get a the wiring inside it easily. I guess that the problem is one or more wires inside has rusted and broken. If they are easy to get to I might be able to fix it, otherwise it's replacement time :(
Looks like I'll have to do it myself - I just called both dealers in my area, and they will only fit new parts - their excuse was that they could not warranty the work with a used part - but I just think that they're a bunch of money grabbing :cuss.
A new part is $900, a used one is around $90 - go figure.
Got a replacement pump for $92 (arriving soon I hope) - now I just have to fit it. What's the best way to get the existing brake fluid out? Do I have to drain it at each wheel?
Good old EBay - it was up for about $15 but had a "buy it now" option for $75 - so I jumped on it - came to $92 including shipping and insurance. Has the harness connected and all the relays too. But the best thing is that it's guaranteed for 30 days.
I'd been checking Ebay daily with "Corvette ABS" as my search term - I was actually looking for an ABS tester, but figured I'd replace the whole pump as that's the only component left to replace aside from the wheel sensors.
Got the ABS computer from ebay also - back in November, that cost me just $76 :)
