I just started putting the pistons back in my '93 LT-1 and there is a scraping sound when I turn the crank over. Looking at the photo below there are three scratches. The piston and cylinder are well oiled. Is the ring scratching the cylinder, or is this normal?
it's normal for new rings to make a scraping noise. Be sure you don't dip the pistons in oil, or your rings will take longer to seat.
It is preferred to oil the cylinder, and install the pistons dry.
I f you will be storing this engine, it is permissible to use marvel oil in the spark plug hole and the engine turned over withouth the plugs in. just don't put in too much.
It would be a good time to check to see if you broke a ring before you get motor together. If you suspect a certain piston go for it. It would be sad to hurt engine for a $5 ring
