I finally figured out what is causing all the C4 Power Seat problems! I took my grinding seat track apart today. The gearing is a combination of metal worm gears, metal gears and plastic gears. It's held in place by a plastic base inside the metal housing. On the end of the worm gears are plastic caps. There are 3 of them. Two of the caps on mine were cracked, allowing the worm gears to jump around and not making the connection with the gear it works with. If you look at both sides of the metal transmission portion of your seat tracks, you can see 3 small windows with white plastic in them. These are the caps to the worm gears. The metal housing hold them in place.
The plastic gears seem to work very well with the metal worm gears. I was surprised to find out that they were not the problem. I am hoping to be able to make the plastic end caps out of metal, thus correcting the problem. It seems like a very easy fix. Popping off the rivets of the metal housing was easy and re-riveting them should be as well.
I was curious about what was actually inside those suckers. I've got 2 d.o.a. seat racks at the moment. They both don't move in the fore and aft positions.
When you make those repair caps, make a couple extras, will ya? I'll send you some $$$. Thanks much. :yesnod:
You bet! Shouldn't even have to take the track apart, just take out the rivets for the transmission housing, remove and replace caps, re-rivet...done. I'll let you know.
After more thinking about this, there is a plastic fram inside the metal housing that holds all the gears together. I'm thinking that should also be made in metal. I'll let you know how it goes!
