96 Steering column removal
I have a 96 Vette that I'm trying to remove the steering column. I've looked in the archives for help. The one that was of the most help was dated "2-1-04". I've done everything as described. The column is loose, but I can't get it past the brkt. for the gas pedal. I've removed the (2) scr's. from the brkt. but the brkt. doesn't want to come away from the firewall. There appears to be a clip in between the (2) scr's wlth a "push" type retainer over it. Does this have to come off in order to remove the gas pedal ? Is there some other secret to removing the column ? Is there anything in the engine compartment, other than the bolt for the steering shaft, that needs to be removed? I can't rotate the column in order to by-pass the brkt. for the gas pedal. If you need any more info,let me know and I'll reply as soon as I'm able.

I replaced the steering column on my 96 six speed; there were no interference issues with the gas pedal; what I do remember was that even though the column seemed loose, at the firewall, buried beneath the insulation, was a cover / seal type arrangement that actually sealed the firewall penetration and the nuts holding it tight to the firewall were buried and not obvious to the casual observer. Make sure these are off. Of course the intermediate shaft between the steering column and the rack and pinion unit must also be free.
