Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) - Fix
There are a few threads on CF regarding this guy. It is a solenoid that will not allow you to depress the button on your automatic to shift the car out of park unless the brake is engaged. The problem is on 95/96's, this part goes bad and won't let you shift out of park easily or at all. Other common symptons that I have read and experienced is that it will most likely due this to you after the car has sat overnight or gotten cool. Usually (for me atleast) after having driven the car some, you can shift out of park just fine.
The most common solution I read was just to remove the part. It actually only takes a few minutes to remove once you get the center console off, and there are no other side effects other than you can shift out of park without engaging the brake. There is no need to remove the shift assembly or boot. The two white plastic pieces looks like they may be pop-rivted on, but they are not. Just use a flat head screw driver to remove the white part from the two connections.
Now, the fix...
I was not happy with just removing the part. I wanted to keep that feature. I found this part on eBay: Item #400036064109. It is for a Pontiac, but it will work with some modifications. The metal shaft that extends from the plastic solenoid is about two inches longer than the one for our Corvettes. So you have to actually dissassemble both parts and swap the solenoid. Getting the old one apart was tough for me, but after doing that it went back together with a few soft taps with a hammer.
Anyways, to get your old BTSI working and shifting out of park smoothly again, just swap the little solenoid from inside the plastic case. Once you take apart the new one (it was really easy for me), it should be obvious what to do. I will try to post some pictures if any of you think it is necessary.
