Do you suppose there's a discernable difference in 6 8 or 10 degrees advanced? I had it at 8, and ran it back to 6 to pass smog.. I've been thinking of taking it up to 10...
but dont want to waste my time if it's just.. a waste of time.

I can really feel a SOTP difference between 4 and 6. It's unbelievably dramatic. I actually dialied in up to 8* and stopped. It's like a 30 second adjustment. Just slightly loosen the dist. hold down bolt with a 9/16" or 14mm enough to where ya can turn it by hand but not to where it moves by itself. It's a really easy little adjustment.

Only way to know is to try. Advance it until it pings, then ack off 2 deg.
Mine is set at 3...supposed to be 6...doesn't like 6,so there must still be a boatload of timing down low. It only makes me wonder how much better it'd be if it had that amount of timing, just to give you an example. The best place to tell this, would be at the track.

Doesn't the ECM retard timing if its advanced too far (based on knock - total advance determined by ECM anyway). I thought it didn't make much difference with computer controlled engines. No? Enlighten me... I'd like to learn more :)

The problem with relying upon the ESC cirsuit to back of timing is this:
Say your car pings when you add an extra 2 degrees of advance. The ESC pulls out more than 2 degrees to try to back it off. Kinda like it is hard to get magnesium to burn, but once it starts, it is a heck of alot harder to put it out.
Re: 6-8-10 degrees advanced... any real difference? (Smash)
A safer way is to use a scanner to show knock counts. You may get spark retard before you hear the ping becuase the ECM pulls timing when it sees knock counts.
Re: 6-8-10 degrees advanced... any real difference? (Smash)
My motor seemed to like 10, but that made my total advance 40 which seemed a little high, so I took it back down to 8 which should make my total 38 (if I've got good gas in it:rolleyes: )

I spent a whole night at the drastrip last summer adjusting timing. Mine seems to like 9.5* best, I lost time @ 8* and 10.5*. A scan tool or track time make it much easier to see what your car likes best. Check out this thread info on my track testing if you want.
