Default Strange rear wheel movement !

A Friend of mine noticed something the other day and he was really impressed,he made me go out of the car,he jumped in and showed me some strange behaivor of my rear wheels.-

He applied the brakes and put the car in "D" and wow,my wheel turned kinda "inside" .-

I made this picture and exagerate it so you can understand better what i mean :

I Guess this is due to some worn suspension components,i guess !

LOL i really exagerate it,its nowhere like this, but its noticeable when you apply the gear that it moves somehow (at least a little play) inside the wheel well, please dont laugh at this terrible attempt but im sure you get the what i mean.-

NEUTRAL

DRIVE APPLIED,BRAKES APPLIED

Suspension bushes are kaput ; possibly tie rods as well.

$$$ for AFR heads will have to be spent fixing rear suspension

Either jack the car up and see where the play is or leave it on the ground and look at the suspension from behind (under the car). Whenever someone else puts the car in gear, see if you can tell where the movement is. Probably one of the tie rod ends on the toe strut. That's the round rods that go from the back of the wheel bearing knuckle to the back of the differential. You'll see an arm come out from behind the wheel and go around the spring. There will be a tie rod on the end of that arm and a small shaft that runs parallel with the spring and connects with another tie rod right behind the differential housing. Check both of those tie rods closely.

I would re-think that, the amount of damage you could do not just to you or others if something totaly lets loose, besides tires, wheels and other parts that are under stress because of something damaged could be even more costly and unsafe if let go.

Sure, If you can post some pictures of the back side of the suspension, I'm sure we can work through it. Try and get the back of the wheel and along the length of the rear spring. You'll see, it's all between the wheel and differential and just in front of the spare tire well and muffler. It's tight but you can probably get the photo that we can work with. While your'e under there. look for a round tube about 3/4-inch in diameter. You'll see two links, one on each end. One out by the tire and the other goes in behind the rearend differential. That's the toe adjustment rod and one of those tie rod ends are most likely loose. You'll see movement at one of the ends.

What you posted is for the bottom of the suspension. The part that most likely is worn is actually on the back of the suspension. The tube is smaller in diameter and the ends are tie rods, not the bolt-through type of fasteners like you see in the linked item. theres a nut that goes on a stud that is tapered and goes through the aluminum of the knuckle. It's right behind the wheel and right by the spring. Hope it helps.

WOW that is strange... Bushings I would imagine are not all that expensive and you may as well replace all of them while your at it because i am sure if they are all original they are all in the same condition.

Just remember that once it's done, you'll have a LOT of fun with it. From the time that I purchased my 85 until I got my first drive in it was eight years! We went through about everything. Now, it's a great driver and I'm heading to Carlisle this month with it (From Florida). Looking forward to the trip.

You may have followed my posts regarding the rear steer effect.

I suggest the you inspect the "dog bone" links between the frame and rear knuckle.
Those rubbers must be mush by now................
