#1, ditch the TPI for a miniram or a converted LT1 intake (was also a former third gen'r, I've spent more $$$ trying to get the TPI hopped up than I would have spent on a full Mini Ram setup).
#2 a compcams cc-304 (mild, sleeper) or cc-305 (still idles good, just a slight lump) --> replace the valve springs
#3 comp cams pro magnum roller rockers
#4 chip for ecm - the cc304 will be fine with the stock TPI, but intake change would need a complete re tune
#5 17x11 A-Molds for the rear with 315-35 Nitto drags

Try those first should get you in the high 12's.

THe biggest problem is the TPI with the L98. As far as exhaust, full lengths seem to be the consensus. To me, cat back is not a big power adder for the displacement of the motor and stock heads, just noise; get a factory LT1 cat back from ebay. Stock ignition components are fine. Avoid bolt ons, put that money towards getting your heads ported.

If i go with a LT1 intake do i have to swap heads? Then also i know on newer cars tuning the computer can do alot how about on our cars?

Also i dont think it has stock exhaust system. I was just wondering if they have any sensors on the cat or cats? I would like to take them off for now and have it sounding alittle better. My 90 camaro didnt but i dont know about theses?

thanks
kevin

Oh boy here comes another " factory freak" story

OP-14s stock, 13s if you do every bolt on/free mod inthe book, thats it. Low 12s you will be spending tons of cash, period. Sell taht cam too, it wont work with what you have
there are quite a few guys on this board who went 12s with boltons a few years back... Vic89, 65Z01, TA, and myself to name a few off the top of my head. my 89 went 13.2 with only free mods, a ORY, catback, and DRs. no factory freak, just a talented driver who knew how to get the most out of each performance peice. the secret was 48psi of FP, 9* base timing, cooling the motor to 140* before each pass, and running in good DA. track prep helps as well, as a TPIs run will basically be determined by the launch

throwing parts and $$ at a car and hoping itll go fast wont cut it with TPI. patience, practice, and experience will

What "bolt ons" are going to take a stock 86 into low 13's?
an 86 is only 10-15hp away from my 245hp 89. on my car it took:

- cut filter lid w K&N
- airfoil
- TB bypass
- ported plenum
- AFPR set at 48psi (vac hose disconnected)
- base timing set at 9* BTDC
- MAD front ypipe
- flowmaster catback
- DRs

the above mods got me 13.2 at 104mph with a 1.87 60ft at Cecil County Dragway back in Oct 02'. a 86 should only be a tenth or two behind that. add headers, a stall, and some gears and 12s should be easy

That is almost the exact recipe used on my '85 bolt on Vette to get very low 13s. Except I had underdrive pulleys, offroad pipe, and 1.6 roller rockers, and my track is basically at sea level.

Not a factory freak, just a lot of trial and error in perfecting the combination that i had at the time.

awesome results

my car had an offroad ypipe as well. the MAD front ypipe i mentioned in my list was a 2.5" replacement for 86 - 91 corvettes that deleted the precats

sorry to ask but i have a few questions about some of the stuff. I dont know what you are talking about when you say airfoil and DRs? Then i know what the tb is but what bypass? Then last you said "AFPR set at 48psi (vac hose disconnected)" what dose that help and why?

thanks alot

an airfoil is a small part that goes between the throttle bores to smooth out airflow on the stock throttle body. power gain is debateable, but ive always had one on my Vettes. figure it cant hurt

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SLE-22100/

DRs = Drag Radials. youre gonna need some sticky tire to get good E/T. I personally favor Mickey Thompson ET Street drag radials. for stick cars tho, slicks would be better

AFPR set at 48psi with vac hose disconnected = Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator. its a part found under the TPI plenum that controls fuel pressure. stock ones are not adjustable. aftermarket parts allow you to control the fuel pressure. disconnecting the vacuum hose at idle simulates WOT fuel pressures. this is the setting you make adjustments at

TB bypass = GM piped coolant into the throttle body to prevent icing on the throttle plates in cold climates. bypassing the TB coolant prevents hot antifreeze from heating up your intake manifold a bit when driving. thought to produce a bit of extra power, or at least more consistancy between runs. theres a hose on each side of the TB... to do the bypass, you disconnect the hoses from the TB and connect them with a tube

if you have any other questions, feel free to ask

Ok well thanks for all of your guys help. I was thinking about going with some new rims but i dont know if i would like 17's or 18's? Then what a good tire for the best money? Also would rim size mess with any of the Z51 parts?
thanks

Well today i got it and drove it around alot! deffently awsome! I never knew having a manual with 70 more hp and like 70 more pounds a torque would do so much! I shifted into 2nd easy and was going about 20-25 and hit it and it started burning out so i let off real quick lol. I dont think i need any more hp for a while. Atleast in 1st and 2nd, 3rd and 4th i would like to have more though.
