I got a new steering rack installed at the Chevrolet dealer yesterday and looked at it to see how it looked and I noticed the rubber boots on it seemed bigger than the old ones and were all twisted instead of looking neat like the old ones. Is this common or a problem?
Either you can straighten them yourself just by twisting them, use a pair of pliers on the clamp or since you paid the Dealer take it back & let them do it. Ten minute job for them & most of the time is putting the car on the hoist.
It was 775.00. I took it back yesterday and they fixed it and said the mechanic was used to older racks that had hard rubber boots that you don't have to unclamp, so he didn't unclamp it when he udjusted it for alingnment. I would have thought he would have seen this! I had to get a part from Louisville and I live in Parkersburg WV. They said it was the only one. I have a 1984. Good luck!
I have a 1984 vette as well. I need to do the rack on mine too.. I think I am going to do it my self after seeing you paid $775 to have it done.. I already have the rack, Anyone out there have any suggestions that may make it a little easier to do?
That's the second time I heard that. Think I'll take it to the shop and wait at the bar til it is done.
HMMMM, That sounds like I good idea too,
Wonder what a shop would charge me to swap racks & the alignment...
Think I would rather save the cash, I will look around tomorrow & see what we are looking at for cost...
