My manual says to use 80w 90 GL5 gear oil with GM limited slip modifier.
With all the new gear oil out in the last 15 years I wana use a full synthetic 75w 90 GL5 gear oil and it says works with limited slips.
Can I use this?
Do I still need the GM limited slip modifier?
Thanks all I'm new to the vette world but I'm going throgh and changing all fluids.
Als any help on weather stripping would be great. should I buy GM weather striping or is the aftermarket stuff just as good?
The synthetic will be fine. If its designed for limited slip, you won't need an additive.
The after market weather stripping I've used was OK. The worst part is removing the old stuff.
I'm using royal purple synthetic that says it's got the limited slip additive already in it, I believe it's 75 90, but i'd have to check to be sure.
On a side note, if a friend comes over to help you change the fluid, don't spray the new fluid in his hair. It doesn't come out easily, and it has a pretty strong odor.
For general street use, the recommended 80W-90 GL5 with a bottle of the additive will work just fine. If you intend to push the car like drag racing, track days and such, then go with a synthetic.
If you get "chatter" or a clunking sound from the diff with a synthetic that advertises a friction modifier, then you will most likely still need a bottle of the GM posi additive.
