the brakes on my 96 lt4 have given yeoman's service but they won't last forever. When the time comes I'd like to replace the stock style one piece rotors with a two piece design; i.e. an iron rotor mounted on an aluminum center piece (i.e. "hat"}. So far my research indicates that the only 2 piece rotor for a C4 is made by Baer Brake systems with the following part numbers, #2302041, front pair, for aftermarket wheels $676 list; #2301012, front pair, oem, $496 list; and, #2302019, rear oem, $426 list. Pricey, compared to a one piece rotor ? yes.
These are as slotted and drilled design, and while opinions vary, and some opinions are definetely against drilled rotors, these are the top of the line Baer rotors and the manufacturer claims that the drilling, as done by Baer only enhances performance.
Has anyone used these rotors or any Baer product?
Is anyone aware of any other two piece rotors for a C4?
One other thing, Corvette Garage, seems to have the best deal on these rotors, a complete set of four two piece rotors, two pair, front and rear, $809
Has anyone dealt with Corvette Garage?
Please feel free to post your opinions, advice, or experiences on these two subjects. I would appreciate it. Thanks.
My 94 is used only for low and high speed autocross racing. I have spent a LOT of time both on the phone and in person discussing brakes with various manufacturers, both makers of full systems and makers of pads only. I also listen when at events and they are talking to other people. The almost universal response from them when asked about drilled / slotted rotors is a question back at you. "Do you intend to do long stints of high speed racing with heavy braking at each and every corner?" When the answer is no, or that it's a street car, they say that unless you really like the looks, and are willing to pay for it, drilled / slotted rotors will do nothing for a street car. The brakes simply don't get hot enough long enough for there to be any advantage to justify the additional cost.
The pad makers add that they love it because the extra edges on the slots eat the pads quicker so you have to buy pads sooner.
Of course out in the marketing world they deny this because after all, they are in business to sell product. Very expensive product with high margins. But when you get them away from the sales guys the engineers tell the whole story.
Just my two cents of course.
By the way, I know a couple of racers that use the BAER products and they love them, so for quality they get high marks.
The only thing I'll point out is that Summit Racing sells Baer drilled/slotted two-piece rotors for crazy cheap (relatively speaking). For some reason they don't have the solid rotor part numbers. So you'll pay about as much for solids as the drilled ones (though usually the drilled are pricier).
I like my 2 piece Baer Eradispeed drilled and slotted rotors. I downsized to 12 inch on the front for weight savings of rotational mass for drag racing. My car still stops great. I have Baer all around. They look great and perform well. Their customer service is great, also. I paid $300 a pair for new ones off Ebay. Took me over 2 years to get both sets at that price. If I'm not mistaken, the Baer rotors are warranted against warping.
