DOT 5.1 is an extended, but compatible fluid with DOT 3.

Here is a like with a short but somewhat reasonable text on the subject:
http://www.batauto.com/articles/brkfld.html

The explaination is not totally complete or absolute, but is a good start.

DOT 3 and DOT 4 is just really a spec for boiling points and such. The synthetic just apparently meets and exceeds that spec easily. It's kinda like synthetic oil, sure they meet API SG or whatever just like the dino oil, but it exceeds it further, etc, etc.

Basically I bought it because it was compatable with what I had, it was had a fairly high boiling point, and it was fairly cheap.

I have wondered about the design of speedbleeders. It seems that air would continually enter the system on pedal retraction from the lack of seal at the threads. Your experience?

Two questions come to mind:

1. Where to buy speed bleeders
2. Best brake fluid for a weekend driver.

Just did brakes and am still getting air out of the lines from cleaning and painting the calipers (took them off the car for clean and paint). Sounds like speed bleeders would help with the air and this is a good time to do a fluid change out some can you help with a recommendation on what fluid.

Thanks

The valvoline I got was decently priced. If you change any fluid frequently you should be alright, so long as it just meets the DOT 3 or 4 spec.

I know you can get speed bleeders from http://www.internetracerssupply.com I think they are in the camaro section. There are other places as well, you can probably get them from the forum mall.

Does anyone know the size of the bleed valves on an LT4. It appears that there are several to choose from

Thanks

The Ford DOT 4 was designed for their fleet truck sales to save on warranty claims. It has a blue tint to it. I don't know the boiling specs off the top of my head, but Ford claims them to be higher than normal DOT 4.
