Default new engine for a 87 vette?

Right now i have a stock 87 vette with the 350 engine. There are no problems with this car. Right now im just gonna keep things all stock until i have problems with the car. Later on when my engine gets bad im thinking of getting a stroker engine like this one: http://www.tandlengines.com/chevy_sb...m_408_a-4.html

This is the best engine i can fiind that has the most horsepower with a good price. Is this a good engine for the car? Btw i just bought the 87 vette and he uses regular gas. should i change it and put premium instead he said it runs fine as it is. But I know the new engine takes premium.

What are you going to use for an induction system?

Regular is fine for your engine.

Do you have to deal with emissions? Wanna leave it fuel injected or carb it? Auto, stick, rearend gear, stall on converter ?

Motor looks like a whole lotta fun.

Oh....Budget?

What are your goals/intended use with a new engine? Drag racing? Autocross, track days? The link doesn't show prices but I would certainly look around at other sources. After reading the specis I find it interesting that the builder uses Autolite plugs and a Fram filter

I would be asking the engine show what brand name parts go into the engine. There is no real mention of what components are used by name. When you build an engine capable of that power level, you do not want "white box" parts as part of the assembly. It appears the cam is a solid lifter type; that can be a PITA to deal with as you will be spending time occasionally adjusting valve lash. Hydraulic rollers will work fine, be quieter and no adjusting.

Going with a carbed motor can work but you will be doing some custom wiring and a few other changes. Using the stock TPI intake will cause some loss of HP and torque over the specs shown but it's easier to go that way in terms of ease of installation. Just check that the heads used will work with the GM TPI system.

This motor (and any high-HP motor will require a good exhaust system. Headers, true duals with an X-pipe and a pair of good mufflers. That in itself will take another $750 or so.

Your car with the stock motor is capable of speeds approaching 140 to nearly 150. Even with an advertised 240HP, it will still provide reasonable performance.

Also, when you get to high power levels, other things will have to change. That much power is going to place a strain on the existing trans and rear end. The suspension will need some work if nothing else but rebuilding. When you go fast, you have to stop. You will be looking for better (and maybe bigger) brakes. The stock tires are a size that will be hard to find in a few years where the tire will handle the power output and handling. Different wheels, better tires will cost more.

Start a budget and start to plan your mods and do them in an order that will help the overall build-up.

tpi 421 Vette (his hanle here) specializes in building 400ci+ sbc. Super nice guy, reasonable, honest. Has a great rep around here, just got done building a 421 sbc for a member here and his own 450ci sbc. he will tell you what youre getting into from start to finish/develop a plan and let you decide from there.

Maybe he will pipe in, you can trust this dude.
