Default Loose Mirror

On my Grand Sport, noticed while waxing the other day, the drivers side mirror is loose. Is this a complicated fix? I know the doors panel must be removed(never have done that one before)....and next, once the panel is removed, can you even get to the screws which holds the mirror? Thought I saw in one caption, there was a metal structure which would be about where the screws are, for one to tighten the mirror....Any help is appreciated!!

is the whole mirror housing loose, or just the glass?

If it´s just the glass wobbling, then it´s either the "trunion", that´s the small cross on the back side of the glass that might be broken and is cheap to fix.

Or it´s the three screws that hold the adjusting motor in the mirror housing that could have rusted to the point that they aren´t tight anymore.

Also a cheap fix.

Adjust the mirror to it´s lowest position and look down behind the glass, find the small "cross", if it´s not broken, squirt some WD 40 on it, wait a while, and with a steady hand you can snap the glass off.

Don´t try to pry off the glass from the cross with a screwdriver unless you want to buy a new mirrorglass or do a repaint on the housing.

NO, not from experience this is, from the FSM mostly.

On my 91, after removing the door sides, there were two 12 or 14 (?) millimeter nuts that hold the housing to the door, it required the outer weatherstrip to be partially removed as well to gain access to the nuts.

Since you have another year, I don´t know how the sides/panels are removed.

Try the easiest first.

If it's the mirror housing, it's not hard to tighten up at all.
Yes, the door panel has to come off.

Once that is off, you can easily get to the nuts that hold the housing to the door.

If you have the factory service manual, the process is detailed there.
I used that to tighten my drivers side mirror housing on my '96.

I actually had the adhesive on the glass come loose so I used double sided tape and glued it back to the house. The glass never completely fell off because the glass was held by the heater/defroster film thingy. The only way I knew it was loose is because the mirror would shake on the highway.

If the housing is loose, then thats a different story.

Yeah, it's the whole assembly that is loose, not the mirror. Looks like I will be removing the door panel here....I have a '96 FSM, so maybe it won't be too bad....Thanks for all the replies!!

It's not bad at all. It took me about 30 minutes is all. Everything is detailed in the FSM.

Since I allready have stashed down my FSM in the car for a trip to the Netherlands, and it´s a 91, I give you this one.

It says it´s called a pinion behind the glass, I don´t recall where I read trunion.

If it doesn´t help, perhaps Agent 86 might have it for your year.
