At the risk of bringing back and older thread and being flamed I'll just give the foot notes - The thread "alarm issues" was about how my vette wouldn't start after my dad accidently tried to start the car after triggering the Forced Entry Alarm. The starter would spin but the car would not turn over. Starter was taken off and tested on a the bench where it worked fine. Placed into car and still nothing...Well today the new starter went in and it fired right up. What a sweet Sound to hear!!
So in closing, the starter went bad or trying to start the car with the alarm going off does effect the starter so the car will not start ever again. i.e. effecting the bendix/solenoid??
Either way I lost about 1 month of enjoying my vette but its back!!
the gear mechanim on the end of the starter actually contains a small clutch. The clutch is designed to prevent starter damage by releasing if the starter gear stays engaged with the flywheel ring gear once the engine has started. Unfortunately these clutch assemblies can and do eventually wear out. Even though the starter spins and the solenoid extends the starter gear and engages the flywheel, the clutch assembly cannot transfer sufficient torque to turn the engine over. Exactly the situation you encountered.
Yes, very glad it fired up. Also in the mix that I didn't mention was the fact that I had a new clutch with alum. flywheel put in and only had about 75 miles on it before this happened. I have bad luck, no doubt about it and don't trust a bench test.
