Re: Any aftermarket replacement for OptiSpark? (Tom Piper)
BTW Tom, Injineer (good man btw) is firing his CNP LS1 coils with a Motec,
which gets a good/accurate signal from the original opti. A little more
expensive this way, but a good crisp ignition none the less. Once you
have had CNP, you won't want to go back.
Re: Any aftermarket replacement for OptiSpark? (arnold)
I think the best alternative is coil packs of somekind. But I'm not sure how you're going to implement that. My best guess would be to look at the design of the LS1 since it uses coil packs.
Re: Any aftermarket replacement for OptiSpark? (BrianCunningham)
All the aftermarket solutions have had reliability issues too. The simplest solution is to seal the seams in the stock unit with permatex and add a factory '96 purge harness kit. The premature failure issues are effectively addressed using this strategy and the device should last 100K+ miles like the handful of owners who live in dry climates, don't wash their motor and keep the stock setup dry. The frustration and anti-LT1 sentiment stems from owners who keep "throwing" expensive Optisparks at their car without $17 worth of mods. I think GM should sell them in 12 packs for some people. I can dump a bucket of water on my sealed and purged '93 unit with zero concern.
Re: Any aftermarket replacement for OptiSpark? (bellmd)
I would think that some kind of crank-triggered magnetic pick-up system would work. Accel, Mallory and a few others have such systems available and have had them for years. It isn't a new idea.
More than likely it's what I'll be using on the new 427 SBC I'm building.

Re: Any aftermarket replacement for OptiSpark? (flubuyu2)
I just did the job on my 92. Used the Feb 01 Corvette Fever article and made all those mods. Feel like I'm pretty watertight now and vented with GM harness kit. I like it. Good enough for little ol me.
