Default 700-R4 Kickdown Problems

Last night, I was driving home, and I wanted to see how fast I could get the 87 up to, so at 80mph, I buried the throttle...got up to 120mph and it was hitting 4800rpm. So I let off the throttle a little and it kicked down into 4th gear (It was in 3rd) so I pushed the gas pedal back down, and immeadiately kicked back down to 3rd, and spun back up to 4800rpm. Is this normal? I've heard that it is. I mean, it's good, because I LOVE the way my transmission behaves. I'm not too worried, because that only means I can't go above 120mph (Which is ok with me, because if I'm trappin 120mph in the ¼, then I must be FLYIN.)

That sounds about right. I believe that if your transmission still has room in the previous gear and you go to WOT from the current gear, it will downshift to the previous gear until it is topped out.

120 is the fastest it could go period or 120 in 3rd? It eventually went into 4th and faster right?

Nope, it WOULD NOT shift into O.D. It MIGHT have shifted at 5000rpm, MAYBE. I didn't keep it WOT to find out. I backed off the throttle at 120mph(4800rpm) and it shifted into O.D., but when I wasn't WOT, I couldn't really get my mph to go up much higher.

Did you try messin' with the TV cable yet?

One possibility is the slider might be in all the way or too far in. I have mine out 4 clicks for now. I took it down the track once with the slider all the way out and I was hitting max speed (OD) of like 45 or 55mph b4 I even got 1/2 way down a 1/4 mi. track. That was one extreme, you could be experiencing the other.

I actually haven't tried messing with the TV cable yet, but I LOVE how my tranny behaves, all EXCEPT for that fact. SO, I think I'm just going to leave it alone for now.

If your car is not shofting into OD from 3rd when you have it floored, I wouldn't leave it at that. Somethings amiss..
Mine pops into 4th(OD) at 115 at about 4800rpms now, and keeps going..
I'd say check the kickdown cable. I have set mine a bit more advanced than normal, (about 1/4" set back towards the rear of the car from the auto-set point). I could set it even further back but then in 2nd it shifts so hard and at higher rpm that I fishtail too easily..

Check it out.. Better safe than sorry..
