Default Porting The MAF continued

Well I am just about to start removing the cooling fins in my 88's MAF. This has me wondering, these fins are so massive what is going to happen to the heat these are supposed to disipate? You folks who have done this have not had a problem with failures? Also, no matter how I remove the fins there is going to be a lot of shavings and dust. I will close off the venturi, vaccuum out the housing and blow it out with compressed air but it seems unlikely I will get absoutely all of it.
Also, I have 2 slightly different MAFs. One has the blade coming right out of the bottom of the venturi, the other has the blade supported by 2 legs to move it more into the middle of the air flow.

I wouldn't remove them if I were you. They are there for a reason, and without them, you'll shorten the life of the sensor. The screens are a MAJOR restriction, but the screens are only preventing somewhere around 50cfm. Your computer and sensor electronics will exceed it's flow measurability before the sensor itself actually becomes a major restriction.

Just port everything out, screens and fins.

Use compressed air to clean out the debris.

Tape up the ends of the inner tube containing the metal wires....probably an obvious thing...but just in case :)

I actually have an extra MAF. I am going to port one and do a dyno comparison this Saturday.

If you are planning on driving any distance other than 1/4 mile I would leave the heat sink alone.

Well I did it. I left on fin there, the one closest to the venturi support, to help cooling a little. On a test drive I can tell no difference. The dyno and the drag strip will tell. I'll let you know. Thanks for the replies.

Just for a fair test, I think you should reset the ECM before both runs to eliminate any variables from the ECM adjusting for either one.

That is a good point and I would like to do it. BUT there is no time between runs. I also have a new prom I have to try and as you know there is not enough time between pulls to let the ECM learn each new component. Here's the plan: 4 runs, first stock prom, stock MAF, then Stock prom, ported MAF, then custom prom, stock MAF, then custom prom, ported MAF.
We will see.

Sounds like a great plan. I'm looking forward to the results. I was starting to think about removing those fins, I have had the screens out for some time with no problems. Which technique did you use to remove the fins? Did you smooth everything out when you were done? Can you take any digital pictures for us? Have fun and good luck.

Are you going to data log all the runs with Diacon or Ease or similar? this would be the best way to compare them.

My guess if you data log all the runs will be..

With Stock PROM and MAF.. it will be close to the 128 BLM

With Stock PROM and Ported MAF.. you will run leaner

With Custom PROM and Ported MAF.. could go either way.. If the custom PROM was done with the Ported MAF in mind.. you should stay at 128 BLM.. if the PROM was programmed for the use of Stock MAF you might be lean.

just my thoughts..
