Default 91 erratic tach

My 91 tach shows 4,000 rpm at idle and pegs out above an idle. Occasionally the tach doesn't work at all then suddenly pegs out. I suspect a ground issue, where do I start looking. From the 60's through the 80's I drove C2 Corvettes but I havn't owned one since 1983. I really like this C4 6 speed convertible.

Replace the "Tach Filter" White wire located on the driver side of the distributor. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/1562973606-post1.html

probably the cluster itself, not the filter. Had the same issues in my '91, replaced the cluster, works perfectly now (don't even have/need the 'filter').

That's interesting about the tach filter, I didn't know there was such a thing.

If I remember correctly 90-93 are interchangable. The 94's and up had a different LCD display or somthing along those lines. They would work but you would need to swap pieces.

I replaced the one in my '90 with a 92' cluster and removed the filter. The tach is pretty bang on now.

had them alright, you just can't buy a new one anymore, you have to find a used one.

the most part yes (functionally), cosmetically though there are some differences, the redline will be different on an LT1 than an L98.

Also I think you need to swap out the center section (speedo/odo) since the positions are reversed from (I think) 94 through 96, compared to earlier.

Thanks, I'll find a 91 cluster. I have seen adds for people who rebuild early C4 clusters, I wonder if any one does 90 and up?
