Default Check your 700R4

I just found out that my 85' which I purchased 6 months ago has never had the transmission serviced, it still had the original filter.
Now it's gonna cost 1-2K to rebuild it. Now I don't now much about transmissions, but the pan had caked on sludge and lots of metal
in it. The guy at the shop said that the 85 had a poorly designed filter, is that true? Just wanted to let everyone know to check their
transmissions to save a big headache.
Also, if the transmission was never serviced, maybe the rear differental still has the orignial fluid.

Yep, the one on my '85 blew up around 57k. I had serviced it regularly since buying it in 99, but I guess it was too late. The planetary gears broke on mine, so for not a whole lot more than it would have cost me to rebuild, I got a reman from GM and had a friend help me install it. It was around 1300. You might want to consider that before spending too much at your mechanic.

Not sure what the book calls for, but I drop the pan and change the filter an fluid every spring. I think that's a lot more often than it calls for, but what the heck. Keeps me out of the house for a while.

Every 30k miles you should change the fluid and filter. There is a new filter design now that improves upon the old design. I changed mine last year, although I could only do a 50% change. The torque converter holds about 1/2 the fluid and does not drain when you drop the pan.

Hey nyvette, is the trans giving you problems? If the tranny drives ok, don't rebuild it. I used to work at **MCO and the slicksters salesmen had us rebuild plenty of good trans because they would show customers junk in the pan. Junk in the pan does not definitely mean you have a prob.

Thanks for the heads up,:) but the trans was giving me major problems, the transmission will not shift into forth gear,
and it is also slipping quite a bit. :cry

My GM service manual says to service the transmission at 100,000 miles under normal driving conditions :smash: or every 15,000 under severe conditions such as taxi service, towing, or police. I'm doing a rebuild right now and don't think the ATF was ever changed :mad

The filter assembly was redesigned sometime in mid-95 I believe, don't really know the difference, but it snaps right into an older transmission. I think the fluid opening is bigger to avoid cavitation under heavy accerlation. Why they put the freaking pick-up in the middle never has made sense to me.

1982-1986 were bad years for the Turbo700, everything was weak. You'd be better off buying a 30-spline from Level 10 or a reputable tranny shop.

As for intervals, after its rebuilt/new one is installed, change the fluid at 800 miles, you'll see some metal particles, this is normal. Then, after that, I like every 9000 miles, or after its been raced hard.

Get a pan with a drain plug, it will make your life much easier. :yesnod:
