When I turn the key the starter will not operate some of the time. All the dash lights come on but the starter will not turn. I replaced the starter thinking it had gone bad, but the problem didn't go away. The last time this happened, I called for a tow, but before the truck arrived, it started. Once, however it didn't start for a day. But it also started 6 times in a row with no problem.
Also, the switch only works when the steering wheel is in the upward tilt position. It's been like that for a year. so I never bothered with it. The key is sloppy in the lock cylinder and when the steering wheel is down turning the key after it is running doesn't shult the engine off.
Any ideas?
I can't trust the car not knowing when it will start or not.
Sounds like the ignition switch is loose. Its mounted on top of the steering column and is actuated by a rod from the ignition lock. There are 2 small bolts that hold it and the high beam switch in place, check those.
