I'm looking to exploit the NCCC rulebook and build a 427SB B2K race car. I'm looking for a 1989-1991 6-speed Coupe. Callaway has a few B2K 'verts and a single 4+3 manual on his web site. I need something with a roof that I can cruise in at 165+ out in Big Bend.
I thought about supercharging this 427, but that would throw me into RP (Race Prepared), and I really want to stay in 3E for a while.
I was wondering if any of you have done any major modifications to your Callaways like...
383+ cubes?
Did you have to upgrade anything on your intake to supply more air to the motor?
What is the biggest turbo you can fit in there?
Did you go to a "turbo" custom grind cam or just an aftermarket cam?
What size injectors did you have to go to?
That's a pretty rare car you're asking for. A 6-speed originally equipped B2k Coupe...well..hmm.. Considering the Automatic version of the B2k is a reworked TH400. Most of the B2k's I've seen are actually 4+3's. Don't ask me why!
Joe, post the same question in the ZR1 section of this forum and you may get some more responses. On all Callaways, the turbos were tucked so low that the motor actually necessitated the installation of a separate oil pan scavenge collector from the turbos. Not that the oil lines couldn't be adapted to an "upgraded" set of turbo's... but the turbos were rare production IHI/Rotomaster units with custom geometry for for the exhaust outlets. Anything is possible! It's just with a Callaway, it's more work than you might think. Beyond that, the inlet and outlets from the intercooler endtanks are "small" limiting flow for any "extra large" turbo application. Check out how the intercooler plumbing leaves from the turbo and enters the inlet of the intercooler.. it'll be tough to make that plumbing any larger than it already is.
Stock Callaway's with the Aerobody should be able to touch 180mph easy. I can say that in mine, it pulls 4th gear with the overdrive on at 130mph like you're pulling a holeshot! Well, that may be a little exaggeration.. but the acceleration and torque still available at that speed is quite phenomenal. Take a gander at the "Kill" section and study some of the Texas crusades. There's a couple Callaways there running serious top end speeds with minimal modifications!
