Default Is this possible?

Is it possible / probable for a speedometer drive gear to spin on the output shaft of a 4+3 transmission? Maybe the clip got damaged? The reason that I ask is that my speedometer usually doesn't work until my oil temp is about 180* and then it works fine. I was wondering if it was spinning and then everything would get tight enough due to the different expansion rates of the parts. I am assuming that to replace the driven gear that I would need to pull the whole transmission. Can this part be inspected by removing the pan on the O/D? I don't have easy access to a lift until the weekend.

My 91 auto. doe's the same thing, takes about 2 miles of driving before the speed readout will register. I kinda think it's the vss. I'd change it out but untill it gets worse I'll just put up with it.

No ,
the gear is on the output shaft in the tailshaft section of O/d behind main body where pan is.
Possible your VSS itself is faulty or the driven gear is not driving VSS properly. VSS and driven gear can be pulled by undoing one bolt.

The gears are located in the tailshaft section at the back of the tranny. This can be removed without pulling the tranny. Remove the driveshaft, unbolt the cbeam and push it back. Lower the tranny slightly. Remove the speedo sensor gear (10mm). Unbolt the 4 15mm head bolts holding the tailshaft on and slide it backwards. Actually, before you do all this, remove the speedo sensor gear and see it the threads are damaged. If so, replace it and you might not even have to remove the tailshaft.
