What is the question? No Gen I engine ever had reverse flow cooling. A little punctuation would go a long way toward making your post readable. How about a single complete thought? What are you doing? What do you want to know? How does "a80 or 81" relate to 85? "I was told", will get you every time. ???
On my car it didn't matter what direction I turned the pump. It ran the same temps for drag, road racing, and street use. Before tossing a working pump, give it a try.
Give it a try. A Vee belt driven water pump is driven in a clockwise direction, the same as the crank shaft rotation. With the serpentine belt drive system, such as the C4 uses, the water pump is driven off the back side of the belt and it turns opposite engine rotation, or counter clockwise. The direction of coolant flow never changes. Only the LTx engines utilize a reverse flow cooling system. Nothing from the Gen II, LTx, engine cooling system will work on a Gen I engine.
